I love going the gym, when we lived in Cardiff I practically lived there. I enjoyed the classes, the mates I had there and the atmosphere. However, now we’ve moved to Liverpool and my gym is literally miles from my house I find myself going less and not seeing as much progress.
One of the main reasons I joined this particular gym was its offer of three free one on one training session’s. Now, usually I’d shy away from anything like this the idea of a trainer scrutinising me and how unfit I was literally makes my stomach turn but I knew in order to results I’d need professional help so in a moment of madness I booked myself in and here’s how I got on…..
Now let me admit something to you guys, in school I wasn’t the fittest or most athletically talented person. In fact, I think I hated PE that much I used to either pretend to be on my period or hide in the music room, pretending I had a violin, piano or guitar Lesson (the only reason I took up loads of musical instruments was because it got me out of lessons). I did enjoy sports outside of school though, and did kickboxing and martial arts on and off from the age of 11 till I was 17. I wasn’t the fattest or the most powerful but I loved it, and it kept me fit. I joined the gym in my second year of uni after I put on the dreaded ‘freshers 15’ and I’ve continued to go the gym since so I always thought I was quite fit.
Anyways, I met my personal trainer a lovely guy called John this morning We had a quick chat about what I wanted to get out of my session. I told him what I was after a stronger and more toned overall body. We started with some warm up stretches, these included glute bridges, shoulder stretches and some hip flexor stretches. I found these quite easy so was looking forward to the next part. He then showed me how to use certain resistance machines to gain strength in my arms and shoulders once again I was quite pleasantly surprised by how much I could lift and sound it quite fun. Then John had me to some squats….well…let me just say. This was interesting!
I don’t know what it was but I just couldn’t seem to trust myself to go all the way down! John then put a little step underneath me to stop me worrying about ending up on arse, the think was once I got to a certain point my arse would just naturally gravitate to the step! To help John them had me slowly squatting down onto the step and then coming back up quickly making sure my posture was correct throughout. For some reason this killed my legs off, I was literally shaking like a wet dog! I swear I didn’t realise how weak I was until I felt it today!
We then decided to do some push ups as this again was a compoundxmivecthat would work my whole body. I realised then that I was doing push ups wrong and John showed me the correct way to do a push up. Now this was hard, having to tuck my elbows in and work through my chest proved more difficult than I expected. I was glad John showed me the correct posture as I now know how to do a correct push up.
I’m definitely gonna take up the offer of another personal training session now I’ve got over my initial nerves, it’s my mission to get fit and strong so if that means undertaking more embarrassing personal training sessions in the future so be it!
*excuse me now whilst I wobble home with sore legs!
