A Day in a Fairytale Castle

My favourite Disney movie growing up was Beauty and the Beast. My mum thought it was because of the films heroine, Belle but it was actually because of the gorgeous castle that the beast lived in. This week I got to be in my own childhood dreams and walk around a castle which looked like it had been stolen from a distant fairytale land and transported to modern day Cardiff.

Castell Coch sits in all of its glory on the outskirts of Cardiff in a little place called Tongwynlais. It’s a 19th Century Gothic Revival castle that was the by-product of a vivid Victorian imagination, assisted by untold wealth. Can you imagine?!

Inside the house is stunning, the walls are decorated with elaborate paintings probably inspired by Grimms Fairytales. There wasn’t a single detail left when William Burges created this rural retreat for the 3rd Marquess of Bute.

We found ourselves getting lost in the splendour of the glorious facade whilst wandering up and down the endless amounts of spiral staircases.

Of course though, no castle would be complete without a spooky dungeon!

I hope you like this post and if it’s inspired you to visit a castle that’s brilliant!
